BBC1’s Countryfile to feature work of Secret World’s wildlife carers

BBC1’s Countryfile will be featuring the work of carers at Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre near Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday (August 30th).

A segement on the primetime programme will explore how the East Huntspill charity is helping Britain’s smallest rodent – the harvest mouse.

One of the show’s presenters, Ellie Harrison, was shown by animal carer Sam how to prepare a tank for the little mice with natural plants and food, before she met a group of mice who were about to find a new home.

She also chatted with Secret World’s founder Pauline Kidner, who said: “A group of the little mice made a very special journey to a beautiful new home in the wild, and we think they’ll be right at home there!”

“Visitors to Secret World love seeing our harvest mice with their delightful features and impressive acrobatics, using their prehensile tail to climb through the grasses.”

“The mice are not just for show though – we’re breeding and releasing the little mammals to try and increase their numbers in the wild. Harvest mice have been declining in recent years, partly due to changing agricultural practices.”

Secret World helps over 5,000 sick, injured and orphaned wild animals every year, big and small. It will be holding a special open event this coming weekend, as we previewed here.
