Burnham-On-Sea health projects receive funding windfalls

-

Nine health-related organisations across Sedgemoor – including several from the Burnham-On-Sea area – have this week received financial boosts from Sedgemoor District Council.

They have received community grants from a one-off budget of £14,000 set aside for health-focused projects in the district.

The nine organisations receiving cash are the The Peoples Plot of Burnham Highbridge (£1,315), Amateur Swimming Association South West (£1,800), Somerset Activity Sports Partnership (£2,000), Shipham First School (£669.37), Bridgwater Buccaneers Basketball club (£2,000), Clocktower Wellness Centre, East Brent (£1,504), Link Education Centre in Bridgwater (£1,000), Bridgwater Martial Arts Academy (£1,000) and New Leaf Life Design (£2,000).

The Burnham and Highbridge People’s Plot project has received £1,315 to set up a community food growing project that will deliver a series of workshops to encourage people to grow and cook healthy food.

Spokeswoman Sarah Milner-Simmonds said: “This support from the Sedgemoor Community Health Fund means that The People’s Plot can go ahead with growing and cooking workshops in the heart of our town – the growing space will be a lasting asset to a community which is hungry for fresh local food and will be a healthy space where people get together to make good things happen.”

The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) South West received £1,800 and will use the cash to introduce new ‘Swimfit’ programmes at three Sedgemoor pools, including Burnham Swim and Sports Academy. Swimfit is a poolside motivational tool.

Also in our area, the Clocktower Wellness Centre in East Brent has received £1,504. Its six-month Wellness Matters healthy lifestyle programme will incorporate yoga, healthy cooking, food growing and lifestyle coaching.

The Somerset Activity Sports Partnership also received £2,000 for a new healthy weight project that will target Year 5 pupils within Sedgemoor schools. It will deliver activity and cooking sessions to encourage children to lead healthier lifestyles.
