A clean-up is underway after a group of travellers left rubbish strewn in hedges and on the grass at Apex Park in Burnham-On-Sea.
The three caravans and several vehicles arrived on Monday evening on a grassed area in Marine Drive, owned by Sedgemoor District Council, near the entrance to Apex Park – and they left on Thursday evening.
A full clean-up by Sedgemoor District Council’s Clean Surroundings team is underway to clear rubbish that includes gas cylinders, toilet waste, beer cans, a fuel can, tyre and a tent.
Sedgemoor District Council’s legal team had gone to court this week in a bid to move on the group of travellers.
The council issued and served the travellers with court papers and a hearing was due to take place before Weston Court on Monday, 30th April.
Burnham-On-Sea’s MP told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “There is no excuse for illegal encampments.”
He added: “Sedgemoor’s speed of response shows that Burnham-On-Sea and the surrounding area will be much more difficult for travellers to illegally encamp this summer.”
“Local residents need to see that travellers are not above the law and that our local authorities are exercising the powers they have quickly to minimise disruption.”
