Thieves have struck at Burnham United Football Club this weekend, stealing fencing worth thousands of pounds.
Since the start of the year, dozens of sections of wooden fencing have been removed from around the first team pitch next to the BAY Centre in Cassis Close – with the latest incident occurring early on Saturday (February 9th).
Club secretary Pauline Smith told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It is very frustrating and very expensive. The bad weather in recent weeks has reduced our schedule of games and cut our income, so the repair bill of up to £3,000 is a lot for us to find.”
Coach Luke Hussey added that the club is doubly concerned because new rules are due to come into force this summer where the Somerset County League will require all first team pitches to have fencing or barriers in place between the pitch and spectators.
“We will have to get this replaced by then to meet the new rules so the theft is sickening for us,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
Some of the fencing was originally stolen in January and more was taken overnight from Friday (February 8th) into Saturday morning. Tracks in the mud suggest that a trailer may have been been used to take away the material.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Burnham Police on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
