Highbridge youngsters turn waste ground into community gardens

-

Green-fingered youngsters from Highbridge Dreamscheme have begun work on transforming several areas of unloved waste ground in the town into colourful community gardens.

The group has taken over the upkeep of three gardens on Highbridge’s Morland Estate from Homes In Sedgemoor, nurturing each plot with flowers and herbs.

The youngsters have spent some of their half-term holiday this week working on the ‘green’ project.

Leader Trish Hart told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The project will help the children to appreciate the gardens all year round.”

“The elderly occupants who live nearby will be able to look out and see their work. Instead of seeing three patches of weeds, tree stumps, rubbish and broken walls, they will see something very different.”

“We will keep the gardens weeded and planted with flowers and even grow herbs for the residents’ use.”

“We aquired the gardens last year and in late September time we planted some flowers to make them look nice. Several Rosemary cuttings that were planted are coming along nicely.”

Trish added: “The children really enjoyed themselves there this week and they will learn to appreciate them, and hopefully learn something about plants and gardens at the same time.”

The group is also seeking volunteers to help remove several tree stumps, the brambles and repair the wall. “If anybody knows of any firms or individuals that would be willing to give their time and equipment we would be grateful,” said Trish. Helpers can get in touch with the group via Burnham-On-Sea.com here.
