Proposals to build a new KFC drive-thru restaurant at Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea have this week been approved.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in February that KFC plans to build a new drive-thru at Sedgemoor Services on the northbound side of the M5 just north of Burnham’s junction 22.
The 263sqm KFC drive-thru will create 10 new local full-time jobs and 10 part-time roles and be built in place of an existing car parking area and unused grass area following this week’s approved by Sedgemoor District Council.
East Brent Parish Council had raised several concerns from nearby residents about the risk of extra litter being discarded around the planned site and access road.
Sedgemoor has approved the drive-thru this week with five conditions: That the development will start within three years; The development will be carried out in accordance with the approved plans; Locations of bins to be placed within and around the site will be submitted and approved by Sedgemoor prior to building starting; A scheme for the management of surface water will be submitted to, and approved by Sedgemoor prior to building starting; and a written commitment to the sourcing of local labour will be submitted to, and approved in writing by Sedgemoor.
The condition on litter bins comes after East Brent Parish Council had asked KFC: “Prior to the start of the development, there should be a commitment in writing that there will be suitable receptacles for rubbish around the development and including the car park with clear notices encouraging people to use them. These receptacles should be suitable to accommodate recycle materials.”
“There should be a further commitment to put in place frequent clearance of all rubbish within the development area – also in Strowlands Lane to its junction with Strowlands, 500 metres south of this junction and north of this junction to the junction with Edingworth Road and east of this junction to White House Lane.”
Sedgemoor District Council’s Economic Development Team had expressed its support for new jobs but added that KFC should undertake a commitment to source its labour locally – which has also become a planning condition.
Highways England has offered no observations on the scheme and the Surveyor at the County Highways Transport Development Group has visited the site before the final decision.
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last autumn that Costa Coffee has also been granted permission to build a new Costa Drive drive-thru on the southbound side of the M5 Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea in a further boost to jobs and facilities at the services.
