A dog plunged to its death after falling down steep cliffs at Brean Down on Sunday (February 17th), prompting a fresh safety warning.
A visitor from Bristol was walking his lurcher along the foot of the Down when it gave chase to some goats and plunged down the cliffs on the south side, pictured here.
Brean’s beach warden was called to the scene shortly after 4.30pm, but there was nothing that could be done to help the animal which had been instantly killed.
“The dog had apparently been running after goats and had sadly fallen over the cliffs,” beach warden Dave Furber told Burnham-On-Sea.com. “The owner was understandably distraught.”
It is the latest in a series of accidents involving dogs falling from the cliffs at Brean Down.
The National Trust, which manages Brean Down, introduced a number of new warning signs in 2011, including several on the steps leading up the Down, after six dogs were killed in one year alone.
A National Trust spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We appeal to all dog owners to take extra care when using the cliff-top paths. Dogs should be kept under close control or on a lead to prevent accidents like this happening.”
