Liberal Democrats pick candidate for Burnham county council election

-

Burnham-On-Sea town councillor Tom Nicholls has this week been selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Burnham North in May’s County Council elections.

Tom, pictured, will be one of several candidates standing in the election on May 2nd.

He explained why he is standing to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I want to be a County Councillor because I’m angry with Somerset County Council, which is failing all the people of Somerset, especially the most vulnerable.”

“Cuts have been made to care services for disabled and elderly people, household waste recycling centres, bus services, gully clearing (which increased the problems caused by recent flooding), mental health services and, of course, the library fiasco.”

He added: “The Conservative leadership at County Hall blame these cuts on a reduction in the Council’s grant from central government. However, Somerset was given one of the most generous settlements of any county in England. The current financial situation is being used to justify reckless cuts that will harm the lives of thousands.”

“The people of Somerset, and Burnham North, deserve better than this. I want to become a County Councillor so I can do something about the terrible mess that is being created by the current leadership at County Hall. This will not be easy, but it needs to be done.”

“I want to use my experience of doing casework for our MP, Tessa Munt, and serving on the Town Council to work with other Councillors to improve services for Somerset residents. We need a new County Council with different leadership, working hard for the people of Somerset, especially those most in need of our help. I want to be a part of this new Council, helping to provide a better and
brighter future.”

At the last election in 2009, the Burnham North seat was won by Conservative councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton, who had a majority of 260 votes over Liberal Democrats’ Mike Mansfield, who was the only other candidate.
