Part of Brean beach was sealed off by police and Burnham Coastguards on Saturday afternoon (June 5th) after a metal detector enthusiast came across a possible explosive device underneath the sand.
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and police were called to the main beach car parking area at 1.50pm, where 100 metres of sand was sealed off as a precaution – as pictured here.
Burnham Coastguard Officer Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A metal detector user from Worcestershire alerted the beach warden after finding a solid metallic object measuring 2ft long by 8 inches wide.”
“There was concern that it could be ordnance and therefore Coastguards and police were informed to investigate.”
“Taking the upmost care, we removed some sand from around the object to determine whether it was dangerous or not.”
“Fortunately, it soon became apparent that the item was in fact just a harmless exhaust box and the incident was therefore deemed to be a false alarm with good intent.”
Three teams of police were called to the scene and the beach was closed for approximately an hour.
