Folded club’s final act of goodwill for Burnham-On-Sea Hospital

-

A long-running club for businessmen in Burnham-On-Sea which has folded this week after more than 40 years has donated its remaining funds to the town’s hospital.

As we reported earlier this week, Burnham Probus Club, which had dozens of members at its peak, provided social activities for businessmen and professionals in the area but it has suffered from dwindling numbers of members.

Allan Petoud and Frank Burton from the club presented its remaining funds, totalling £1,100, to the Friends of Burnham Hospital on Friday.

Tony Deahl, Chairman of the Hospital Friends, who is pictured receiving the cheque, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Whilst we are always grateful to receive donations, it is sad that on this occasion it is only because a club which has served Burnham and its retired professional and business members well for many years has been forced to close.”

“We can assure past and present members that the money will be well used to make life better for both the patients and staff of the hospital.”

The Friends of Burnham Hospital raises funds from events, donations and legacies which are spent on a variety of equipment, as well as the fabric of the hospital.

Some of the group’s major projects include the building of the conservatory, the purchase and refurbishment of the Peter Holmes Annexe and the provision of a state of the art Ophthalmic Suite plus other modern equipment.

The Friends will be holding a social event at Highbridge’s Oaktree Arena on March 23rd to thank local people who support the hospital. There will be live entertainment and a disco plus a buffet and a free drink included in the cost of tickets, which are £15 each and available from 01278 783121 or 01278 785727. The theme will be black and white, but not formal dress unless desired.
