Work to build a multi-million pound new health campus in Berrow officially started today (Thursday, June 10th) when a formal turf cutting ceremony was held.

Jane Barrie OBE, Chairman of NHS Somerset, joined practice staff, doctors and the project’s architects, GVA Grimley, at an official turf cutting ceremony this morning at the building site in Brent Road.

The new £2.5million health campus is being jointly funded by Burnham Medical Centre and NHS Somerset and will significantly improve the health facilities available to local people.

In addition to the new GP branch surgery, providing larger consulting and patient treatment rooms for the practice’s nine doctors and 12 nursing and healthcare assistant team, the site will also have a pharmacy, NHS dental services and day services supporting elderly people with dementia.

Mrs Barrie told Burnham-On-Sea.com at this morning’s ceremony: “Although it seems to have taken a long time from initial proposals to now seeing construction work start on the new health campus, I am confident that local people will come to appreciate what a marvellous health facility this is going to be, and how much more convenient it will be for their day to day health needs.”

Dr Harvey Sampson, Practice Chairman at Burnham Medical Centre, added: “Everyone within the practice is delighted that construction work has now started on the new Berrow Health Campus. This new development enables us fulfil our goal of bring high quality health services to the people of Berrow and Brean and in the most modern facilities, in addition to those already offered at our Love Lane site.”

The project’s architects and project managers, GVA Grimley, expect the new campus to be completed by Spring 2011.

The 14,000 sq ft centre has been designed using its rural setting as inspiration. The building’s light oak effect timber cladding will be enhanced with landscaping of reeds, tall grasses and linear trees. The campus is being constructed by Morgan Sindall.
