A new temporary radio station, Highbridge Family Radio, took to the airwaves on Saturday (12th June) to broadcast two days of music, chat and information.
The station, which is supported by the Big Lottery Fund and co-ordinated by Bridgwater charity Somerset Film, is transmitting live from Market Street in Highbridge on 87.7FM and online here.
Presented by local families, for local families, both young and old will be involved on and off the microphone.
Topics being covered range from beekeeping and stargazing to the scouting movement and local history, from local businesses with County Councillor John Woodman, and courses available for adults and families in the area to local societies and the latest news from Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“The participating families have spent the last few weeks preparing for their radio debut, learning how to use recording equipment, gathering feature material and interviews as well as selecting their favourite tracks to play and organising their guests,” one of the organisers, Deb Richardson, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Listeners will also be able to cook along live in their own home when the Strong family from Highbridge present ‘Cook with Dad’. Dad Peter will guide audiences on how to make delicious Rhubarb Fool, whilst Mum Jacqui will give advice on how to grow the essential ingredient, Rhubarb. In charge of the controls, picking the music and introducing their parents will be Izaak, Joseph and Millie, as part of their show ‘The Strong’s Are On!’”
Music highlights during the weekend include local groups ‘Lost in Obsession’ live in session with the Nicol Family in their show ‘Nicol Natter’. Highbridge band ‘Vermin’ are in conversation with Jack Ward, playing tracks from their latest release and giving details of their forthcoming tour. Listeners will also go behind the scenes with local choir the Coastal Singers, fresh from their recent success, a fundraising concert with Tim Pitman.
On Sunday morning, the Rowswell family will present ‘Junior Choice’, dedications and tunes specially for younger children alongside useful information on services for families. In the afternoon the Ward family will be talking about Asperger’s Syndrome and autism.
Request ands messages for friends, family and loved ones can be left in ‘dedication’ boxes, which can be found in the Library, Post Office or Children’s Centre in Highbridge or you can text your name, dedication message and preferred artist/song to 07855 511647.
