Burnham Sailing Club holds emotional send-off for former Commodore
A flotilla of more than 20 yachts took part in an emotional sunset ceremony in Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday evening (September 27th) in memory of a well-known local sailor.
The late Ken Sowden, 73, right, was the popular commodore at Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Club until he lost his battle with cancer last month.
Sunday evening’s ceremony was held to scatter Ken’s ashes in the sea from his own yacht.
22 members sailed into Bridgwater Bay from the club’s pontoons to take part. Mark Tinker, a close friend of Ken, and Dave Wrennall, Burnham Sailing Club’s new Commodore, led the ceremony in the waters between Stert Island and the Steart peninsula.
Dave told Bunham-On-Sea.com: “It was a poignant and very moving send-off for Ken. It was so special to have many of our club members involved to see Ken’s ashes scattered in a quiet spot in the island gap.”
