This was the romantic moment that a tennis-mad couple from Burnham-On-Sea got engaged on Wimbledon’s centre court at the weekend.
Darren Lloyd popped the question to his long-time girlfriend Louise Owen during a break in play at the championships on Saturday (June 26th), as pictured here.
“I successfully proposed, having blagged my way onto the centre court because we only had tickets for court number one!,” Darren told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“I got a security guard to take photos of the whole thing. When I went down on one knee, Lou thought I was just asking the guard to take a tourist snap of us!”
“She looked totally shocked when I asked the all-important question. When she said ‘yes’, we got a cheer from the small crowd behind the security guard taking the photos!”
The couple, who both live in Burnham and are members of the town’s Avenue Tennis club, met two years ago on an online dating site.
Darren added: “One guy who was sitting in the stands nearby said to us ‘I’ve been coming here for 34 years and I have never seen anything like that’.”
“The stress of orgainising this, together with the nerves, made me completely oblivious to Sue Barker and Boris Becker doing a live interview nearby.”
“Afterwards, one of the three photographers just behind us in the photo told us he was from the Daily Telegraph and would like to take some extra pics and we’re now waiting to see if they appear in the national press!”
Louise works as a physio at Bristol Children’s Hospital, while Darren is a project manager for an IT company.
