Countdown begins to opening of Burnham-On-Sea skating rink

-

The group behind the project to set up a skating rink in Burnham-On-Sea this Christmas is lining up a range of activities to support it.

It comes after the organisers from Burnham Events Social Team (BEST) were last month successful in their bid to secure a £16,000 grant from the Town Council to allow the project to go ahead, as we first reported here.

Sedgemoor District Council has also given its backing by waiving the rental fees for the group to use part of Lynton Road Car Park, pictured below, for the three weeks that the rink will be operational from December 12th to January 2nd.

Delighted Kathy Jones, Chairman of BEST, told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the group would press ahead with its plans which it was confident would bring a new audience to Burnham for Christmas shopping and the other events proposed during the town’s festive-themed Frostival.

“We will be opening the rink early in December with a fun fair and other crowd-pullers and it will be able to take up to 25 skaters at a time,” said Kathy.

“It will be lit and there will be carols and it will be fun for all the family.”

“We would like to thank everyone who has helped us so far and to assure them that it will bring in residents and visitors alike.”

“For those new to the town it will showcase what we have to offer and no doubt they will be back once they see what we have to offer especially in terms of independent shops, cafes and bars.”

“The Rink will send out a message far and wide that we are a town which likes to put on a show and welcomes families. We will be using social media, the press and leaflets to let people know it’s here and we are confident it will draw in the crowds.”

The Rink will be open for seven hours a day and skating will cost £4. For more details and how to get involved with BEST contact Kathy on 07743355436.

The rink is made of artificial or synthetic ice which the manufacturers Ice Magic say is like real ice except it doesn’t melt and in all aspects has the same properties of ice albeit with a lubricant that is used to keep the surface slippery.

Ordinary ice skates can be used and the surface allows for all the potential stops, turns, twirls and other gymnastics associated with the sport.
