Burnham Morrisons staff told store ‘will shut at the end of November’

-

Staff at Burnham-On-Sea’s Morrisons store have this week been formally told that the supermarket is set to close down at the end of November.

The 100 staff were formally told that the last day of trading at the Burnham-On-Sea store will be Sunday November 29th.

One staff member, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “It’s the terrible news we’ve all be dreading – the store will be closing, with many jobs being lost here in Burnham so close to Christmas.”

The decision comes despite an ongoing local campaign to try and save the store. A petition has been signed by around 2,400 local people calling for the firm to reconsider the closure.

And a protest was also held during Monday’s Town Council meeting where residents and staff waved signs calling for action to save the store, as pictured below. A rallying call was made to the council to step in and help.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We have looked extremely carefully at whether our store in Burnham-On-Sea can be turned around but unfortunately we cannot see a way of making it viable.”

Morrisons announced last month that 11 stores across the UK had been earmarked for closure as part of the cost-cutting moves.

The 11 stores across the UK are Burnham-On-Sea, Castletown in Sunderland, Clevedon, Little Hulton, Northallerton, Oldbury, Salford, Shildon, Streatham, Tyldesley and West Bromwich.
