A new fundraising campaign has this week been launched to help restore a historic building in Burnham-On-Sea.
The old stable outside St Andrew’s Church in Burnham’s Victoria Street is in need of ‘urgent work’ that could cost up to £19,000.
A campaign has therefore been started to find the cash and allow the renovation to proceed.
Julia Smith, a member of the church’s congregation, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Stable outside the Church wall is in a very dilapidated state. Two walls are in a very poor condition and the roof is needing to be replaced.”
“To repair in a sympathetic manner may take upwards of £19,000. It is a listed building and hence needs to be preserved within the parameters of planning regulations.”
“Admittedly it does belong to the Church but is also a major part of the town history and heritage, without doubt many local residents would be sad to see the collapse of The Stable should it continue to deteriorate.”
“For many years, The Children’s Society presented the Christmas Nativity Scene in the Stable until it become too dangerous to do so.”
“This is why we are appealing to the town to help fund the repair and preservation to ensure The Stable is part of the heritage of Burnham-On-Sea for many years to come.”
“We have started to do our bit by hosting a concert on July 28th by Francesca Bowkett and Friends who are performing ‘Magic of the Musicals’. This should be a very enjoyable evening with tickets on sale from the Crafty Teacup and BIARS at £10 to include wine and nibbles.”
“Please can everyone consider The Stable and how money can be raised to fund the restoration of this important Grade 2 Listed Building.”
The building dates back to at least 1841 according to parish records, when those attending church services from across the parish were able to tie up their horse in the stable.
Julia adds: “Over the past decade and more we have carried out considerable fundraising for a number of important projects for the Church, such as the restoration and re-siting of the Grinling Gibbons Angels to a more prominent position within the church – the carving has been admired by many visitors.”
“We have also had the roof repaired as it leaked, following this the lead was stolen on several occasions and the roof is now protected.”
“In 2016 we had the electrical installation rewired, improved lighting installed and the interior redecorated. This has also brought positive comments from locals and visitors alike on how light and bright but also such a peaceful place to visit, walk around or just sit quietly.”
“The church is now used for many community events including Burnham On Board, Dementia and Bereavement Café’s, plus several local groups now meet in the church on a regular basis. A result of the foregoing is that the coffers are now sadly drastically depleted. This was not unforeseen, however we did expect a respite from the intense fundraising involved to get to this stage.” More details on 01278 787341.
