Berrow Beef & Lamb opened their farm gates to visitors on ‘Open Farm Sunday’ (June 10th) when visitors got a chance to see the busy world of farming up close.
As well as being a fun and informative day out for all the family, the event gave visitors an opportunity to see at first-hand all that farmers do and the impact their work has on all our lives.
Over 1,500 people headed to Berrow Beef & Lamb – based at Faircott Farm in Brent Road – for the free day.
The farm’s Sarah Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We had a fantastic turnout for our second Open Farm Sunday here at Berrow Beef and Lamb.”
“We’ve had loads of really positive feedback from visitors who found the event both fun and informative.”
She added: “We’re thrilled that so many people wanted to come and see what goes on behind the scenes on a working farm – we’re really proud of what we do here and it’s great to get the opportunity to share that with so many people of all generations.”
During the day visitors could see cows, sheep, lambs and poultry up close. There were also be guided tours of the farm and leading informative nature walks in the fresh air, with tractor and trailer rides.
For the lovers of tractors and farm machinery, there were also static machines to admire and have a selfie with, plus demonstrations including hay baling, horse shoeing a butchery demonstration and bale wrapping.
There were also demonstrations of how sheep shearing is done, giving visitors insight into how the animals are cared for.
An army of volunteers helped with the event including a Butchery demonstration from Somerset Sausage Company, Nigel Smith with Berrow Beef & Lamb tasters on the BBQ, Eat:Burnham’s Bev and Sarah on the meat stall, a Natural England representative, BARB’s team in the car park, Friends of Berrow School selling hot & cold drinks, and Blackmore Farm ice-cream.
The event was promoted nationwide as ‘LEAF Open Farm Sunday’ managed by Linking Environment And Farming.
