Burnham-On-Sea artist’s rugby-themed donkey goes on show

-

A Burnham-On-Sea artist has put the finishing touches to one of her most unusual commissions yet – a painted donkey.

Judith Champion has created this rugby-themed donkey, which is among 40 on display across Weston-super-Mare to celebrate 200 years of tourism in the town.

The glass fibre animals, which have all been sponsored by local businesses, are three quarters the size of a real animal and are now living on concrete plinths around Weston until November when they will be auctioned for Children in Need.

Judith, who created the animal at her studio in Stoddens Lane, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I have painted some strange items before, including some props for pantos, but nothing quite like this.”

“It’s been difficult to paint around the legs and tail. 3D painting is not as easy as you might think!”

Her rugby-themed donkey has been nick-named Jonny after the England player Jonny Wilkinson.

There is a possibility that the whole England team could be asked to sign it before November’s auction to help boost the amount raised for charity.

The town’s Grand Pier events co-ordinator, Fiona Hooper, added: “It’s a celebration of tourism in the town and the reopening of the Grand Pier.”
