A project to bring theatrical performances into shops in Burnham-On-Sea to boost visitor numbers has been given a £5,000 cash boost by the Town Council this week.
Organisers Selina Keedwell and Jacqui Strong discussed the plans at a council meeting on Monday (October 12th) where the ‘Trading Local’ project was given a green light.
“The main aim is to encourage more people, particularly residents of Burnham and Highbridge and the neighbouring villages to come into Burnham rather than taking the trip to Weston or Bridgwater,” Jacqui told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Art attracts a wide audience and within our community we have active drama, music and arts groups – all of which could be involved.”
Alongside performances in town centre shops from next April, there will also be workshops with professionals.
The plans have already been discussed with several local organisations, including Burnham WI, Burnham Chamber of Trade, Moose International and BEST, plus local schools and nursing homes.
“We both really feel this project will work in Burnham, bringing the whole High Street together and boosting footfall,” added Selina. “Several successful productions have already taken place at various local towns and cities including Wells, Crewkerne and Exeter.”
“Neither of us have a vested interest in making this project work – we will not get any financial benefit from the project. We will donate time effort and energy to ensure it succeeds with professionals with experience.”
She added: “We would welcome any additional support from local people interested in being involved and helping, but will be making contact with a number of local groups and societies in the next few weeks.”
The Town Council’s Town Projects Committee voted in favour of £5,000 of Tesco 106 funding being allocated to the project. A further £2,000 grant application will be made to the council’s Policy and Finance Committee.
