Dozens of villagers filled a public meeting near Burnham-On-Sea this week to discuss stepping up their protests against National Grid’s proposed 37-mile line of huge power pylons through the area.

The energy giant held a ‘drop-in event’ in Mark last month to seek the views of the public about its controversial proposals for a 400,000 volt line linking a planned new power station at Hinkley Point C with a sub-station at Avonmouth.
Earlier this year, the Infrastructure Planning Commission – which will ultimately decide on whether National Grid’s plans get a green light – told the company that substantially more work is needed to increase people’s understanding of the proposals.
Tessa Munt told Burnham-On-Sea.com after the meeting: “It was a good meeting in which a large number of constructive points were made about how to put more pressure on National Grid to reconsider its plans. The underground route for the new power lines is still the preferred option for many local people.”
The National Grid consultation deadline for feedback from the public is July 23rd.
