Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge will be without an official Town Crier until next Spring at the earliest, councillors have decided.
Town councillors have decided not to appoint a replacement for the former town crier Fred Smith (pictured), who died last year, partly due to their financial restraints.
Town clerk Eileen Shaw told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The decision has been made out of deference for Fred and also for economic reasons.”
“Councillors feel now is not a good time to be allocating money towards the role.”
She added that the decision will be re-considered again by the next council when it is appointed next April. Mr Smith died last October after being Town Crier for 24 years.
