Brean golfers raise £1,500 for Somerset Breakthrough Breast Cancer

-

£1,500 was raised for Somerset Breakthrough Breast Cancer when a successful charity golf day was held in Brean on Friday (April 12th).

The annual Charity Day at Brean Golf Club is always a popular and competitive event but the main aim is to try to raise significant funds for the Captain’s chosen charity for the year, which this year is Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Fifteen teams took to the excellently presented, challenging golf course at the Leisure Park for 18 holes of golf before sitting down for a carvery lunch in the Tavern and a prize-giving ceremony and charity auction.

The two teams who ended the day way out in front of the rest were The Magic Carpets and Jones Bros, both of whom handed in cards of 88 points which was good going on a generally dry, but breezy day.

After the countback rules were applied the quartet of Steve Bateman, Alec Bateman, Martyn Cahill and Paul McLanaghan were declared the winners on the better back nine.

The Jones’, Steve, David and Eric, were joined by Pete Barton as they had to settle for the runners-up spot in an event they are often well placed in.

Third place went to Tony Groves, Dave Lockwood, John Mardon and Ian Adams on 82 whilst professional duo Andrew March and Roy Baker teamed up with members Trevor Pitt and Neil Barker to take fourth spot, two points further behind.

The Club Captain Brian Read alongside his Captain Elect Paul Jones, Les Clutterbuck and 2012 Captain Stewart Garret rounded out the prizewinners on 79 in 5th place.

“When all the various monies were tallied up it was announced that the total raised on the day was approximately £1,500 and John and Christine Piper from Breakthrough Breast Cancer thanked the players and Brean Golf Club for their fantastic efforts and hoped the rest of the year would be just as successful for both parties,” Andrew March told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
