The announcement that work to create a new public park in Burnham-On-Sea will start next week has been welcomed by nearby residents and councillors following a long wait for the facilities.
Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported earlier this week that work to transform a former landfill site into a new park called Rosewood Green will begin on August 9th. It comes after the council decided last December to spend £2.4m to clear up the former waste landfill site in order to turn into a public space.
Cllr Bob Filmer – pictured here alongside the district council’s Doug Bamsey, Harley Cook and Jane Moreton – says the scheme will provide welcome new facilities for the hundreds of homes in that part of Burnham.
Bob told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I’m over the moon that the work is starting. It was first considered in the late 1980s before being taken forward in the 1990s. In the 12 years that I have been involved, the project has been delayed by changes in the regulations for dealing with former landfill sites, which we have now addressed, and a badger sett was also discovered at the site which required extensive work with English Nature.”
“All the outstanding isues have been dealt with and a full public consultation on what facilities should be provided.”
“The four and a half acre park will provide seating, play equipment, footpath and cycle way links, plus new landscaping. After so many years of work around the project, it’s great to see it starting.”
The work will be split into two phases. The first will cover the restoration of the tip site and the second will focus on landscaping the site.
The contractor has confirmed they have an estimated completion date of late December this year, subject to weather conditions. The laying out and landscaping of the site will include the provision of social and recreational facilities such as seating, play equipment, footpath/cycle way links and landscaping. These works will be completed in the spring and summer of 2011 with completion in the autumn and winter of 2011 to allow for optimum growing conditions.
