Hovercraft called out to search for ‘person’ on Stert Island

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s hovercraft was called out by Coastguards on Sunday afternoon (August 8th) amid concerns that a person was in difficulty on Stert Island.

The Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft, operated by rescue charity BARB, was launched at 2.45pm from the town’s beach to investigate the sighting of a person on the northern end of the island opposite Burnham.

Burnham Coastguard Station Officer Steve Bird told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A beach warden raised the alarm after spotting what appeared to be a person on the island. Given that access to the island is restricted, this was a concern and the hovercraft’s assistance was requested to investigate.”

“The hovercraft crew and Coastguards fully investigated the report, but no trace of any person was found on the island. It’s possible that an old buoy or tree debris may have been seen instead. This was a false alarm with good intent,” added Mr Bird.
