Proposals for free wi-fi service in Burnham-On-Sea are scrapped

-

Proposals to launch a free wi-fi service in Burnham-On-Sea have been scrapped by town councillors.

At a meeting on Tuesday evening (July 10th), councillors on the Town Projects Committee decided not to proceed with the plans.

They decided that they could not justify spending around £600/month on the service when many cafes, shops, the library and Princess theatre now offer free wi-fi to customers.

The scheme – which was first considered in 2016 – would have seen free internet access being provided along the seafront, in the town centre and on the beach in an effort to make the town more ‘mobile-friendly’.

In 2016, the Town Council considered earmarking around £8,000 of Tesco regeneration funds towards the £20,000 project.

But Cllr Phil Harvey said at this week’s meeting: “It’s time to park this one – the technology has moved on and there’s now good 3G and 4G coverage in the town which modern phones can easily access.”
