Shock over ‘dangerous condition’ of Burnham council home

-

Helen Groves told Burnham-On-Sea.com that she is worried for the safety of her children due to shards of broken glass, discarded gas canisters, blocked drains and damaged brickwork.

Helen, pictured, is due to move into the council-owned property in Love Lane in Burnham this month.

However, she said: “The condition of the property is shocking. You have to walk across the broken glass to reach the property, so it is a worry that one of my children will be injured.”

“I do appreciate the budget constraints that local councils are currently facing, but the safety of tenants should not be jeopardised.”

Helen, who is a member of Highbridge Residents’ Association, added: “I am moving from the Morland Estate following 18 months of non-stop problems there caused by damp. The issues with the house are so bad that part of the floor has fallen in.”

“I had been due to move into the Love Lane house on July 16th, but the date was delayed to late July and now has been moved to later in August due to the work which needs to be done at the Love Lane property. I am worried that it is not all going to get done in time, putting us at risk.”

But Homes in Sedgemoor spokeswoman Sophie Harper told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that Helen’s case is being closely monitored.

She said: “Homes in Sedgemoor has undertaken extensive works at the property in Love Lane – that are continuing – to ensure it meets the highest standards before Miss Groves takes up her planned tenancy there.”

“The team have been working hard to meet Miss Groves’ needs, and are in regular contact with her to ensure that all her concerns are being addressed. Possible moving dates have been discussed, however no dates were fixed for when the tenancy at the property would begin.”

The spokeswoman added: “It is common practice as part of the offers process with prospective tenants that possible moving dates are discussed, and Miss Groves was supplied with speculative dates depending on the outcome of the extensive refurbishment works being undertaken.”

“Homes in Sedgemoor is doing everything that we can and working hard to ensure that Miss Groves is able to move into the property as soon as possible.”
