Dozens of GCSE students at Highbridge’s King Alfred School were celebrating on Tuesday morning (August 24th) after achieving record exam results.
The Year 11 students have helped the school see a big rise in its top grades with an increase of more than six per cent in A* and A grades plus distinctions and distinctions with stars.
“76 per cent of students achieved five or more GCSE grades at A*-C grades, meaning we have achieved our highest-ever points scores,” head teacher Andy Owen told Burnham-On-Sea.com. He added that the pass rate for five or more GCSE grades at A*-C including English and Maths is 50%.
Four students – Alex Aylward, David Jarvis, Robyn Marsh and Cleo Stead – scored A* and A grades and/or Distinction/Distinction* in all of their subjects, which Mr Owen said was “a tremendous achievement.”
Other star pupils included Tom Bugden, who got 7A*/As plus a Distinction, and Alannah Frost, who achieved 9 A*/As and a distinction.
Jessica Greg found 9A*/As in her results envelope while Robbie Hughes achieved 7A*/As and a Distinction.
Others who did well included Stjohn Peters (6A*/As and a Distinction), Ben Robertson (8A*/As), Rebecca Scott (8A*/As and a Distinction) and Jack Sergison (^A*/As and a Distinction).
As well as paying tribute to the hard work of students, staff and parents, Mr Owen also recognised the important role of local primary schools.
“We are delighted that once again our students have achieved excellent results across the full range of abilities. I would like to congratulate all those involved in their success, the parents, the staff of King Alfred School and our local partner primary schools, who play such an important role in the education of our young people,” he said.
The school has a record number of students staying on into the sixth form. It also achieved its best-ever A-level results last week.
