Shock as Burnham-On-Sea FolkFest 2016 is cancelled by organisers

-

One of Burnham-On-Sea’s biggest annual events has been cancelled next year due to a lack of helpers, its organisers have decided this week.

Burnham’s popular FolkFest – which started in 2006 and has run every year since – won’t go ahead in 2016.

The decision was made at the FolkFest annual general meeting, held earlier this week in the town.

FolkFest Chairman Dom Wills explained to Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Basically, we’ve lost too many of our key staff, burned-out by a decade of hard unpaid work.”

“While FolkFest has been a wild success, too much work has fallen on too few shoulders. It’s time for a break, if not a permanent vacation.”

He added: “Although there will be no festival in 2016, there will be two high-quality all-dayers, both at The Princess Theatre. The first will take place on Easter Sunday March 27th, the second on Saturday September 3rd. We will seek to put on the best acts available.”

“Beyond 2016, the future is uncertain. It’s possible, but very unlikely, that FolkFest will return in its traditional format.”

“We’d need someone to step forward and take on the job of booking all those acts. Anyone wishing to give it a go can contact us via the FolkFest website here.”

He continued: “As they are not FolkFest, the 2016 concerts will not be limited by folky parameters. We will be booking acts from other genres – rock, ska, pop, maybe even reggae.”

Burnham’s FolkFest was launched in 2006 and has steadily grown in popularity, with this autumn’s tenth event being hailed the best ever with big crowds being drawn to the town centre over four days in September.
