Three young people were led to safety from the mudflats at Brean by Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards on Monday evening (August 30th) after getting into difficulty.
Coastguards called out Burnham’s BARB rescue hovercrafts, two lifeboats and a helicopter at 7.15pm after a beach warden reported concern for the trio, who were on the water’s edge several hundred metres from the shore next to Brean Down.
“The three people – aged 23, 14 and 12 from Bridgwater and North Petherton – had not responded to calls from the beach warden to come back from the water’s edge despite being in knee-deep mud with a fast-incoming tide around them,” Burnham Coastguard Officer Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“One of the youngsters’ family was frantic with worry and, given the incoming tide and falling light, this was a potentially very serious situation.”
Two members of the Burnham Coastguard mud rescue team waded out to the trio and guided them back across the mudflats to the safety of the beach.
BARB’s Spirit of Lelaina and Light of Elizabeth hovercrafts were both driven by road to the scene and were ready to launch on the beach.
Two Burnham RNLI lifeboats were stood down soon after launching, as was a rescue helicopter from Portland.
