Thousands raised for charity in memory of Highbridge resident ‘Big Al’

A Highbridge charity football match has raised thousands of pounds in memory of Alan Conibeer – known locally as Big Al – who sadly passed away in March.

The proceeds of the football match day have this month been handed over to two good causes.

Hayley Wills said: “It was an amazing day with tremendous support from the local communities who all came long to support, including former footballers from Burnham and Highbridge.”

“All the children got involved by making and selling loom bands, cakes, guess the name of the teddy, raffles and many more stalls, plus a barbecue and refreshments.”

“Many local businesses donated food, vouchers and prizes – and after the match it was back to Highbridge Social Club for a skittles competition and further raffles. The support, generosity, kindness and donations from people was just overwhelming.”

She adds: “We raised a substantial amount of money on the day, and the money kept coming in on the go funding page we had set up. With further donations, the total raised was £5,643!”

“After paying funeral costs and a memorial plaque for a bench at the town clock, we had a substantial amount of money left to go to the two charities that Alan supported – Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance and the NSPCC.”

“The cheques were presented to the charities on Saturday at Highbridge Social Club in the amount of £1,500 to each charity. So on behalf of his family and friends we cannot thank everyone enough for there kindness, support and donations.”

“Alan would have been overwhelmed and very humbled by this and very proud of everyone.”

“Special thanks to these local businesses – Highbridge Social Club, Maiseys Bakery, The Boathouse Café, Southwell House, Millards Funeral Directors, Andy Chedzey, Jade Garden, Robs Fish Bar, Lisa at L&F, Superchips, Eton, Highbridge Caravans, The Globe Inn, and Top House Skittle Team.”

“All who donated and supported us are thanked from the bottom of our hearts.”
