Burnham-On-Sea town councillor resigns, prompting a possible by-election

-

A Burnham-On-Sea town councillor has resigned this week, prompting a possible by-election.

Sue Barber has stepped down from her seat representing the Burnham South Ward.

Sue told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Unfortunately I have decided to resign from the town council because I am struggling with the deterioration of my vision due to macular degeneration.”

“I have enjoyed being both a former Sedgemoor District councillor and a Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge town councillor and would like to thank everyone involved for their support during my six years as a local councillor.”

“I will promise to keep in touch and help where I can with my local conservative branch of which I will continue as a member.”

Following the news, Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council has formally announced the vacancy for a councillor in the Burnham South Ward.

A spokesperson says: “If, within 14 days after the date of this notice, requests for an election to fill the said vacancy is made in writing to the Chief Executive, Electoral Services, Somerset Council, Bridgwater House, King Square, Bridgwater, TA6 3AR by TEN electors for the Ward, an election will be held to fill the vacancy, otherwise the vacancy will be filled by the Town Council by co-option.”
