Somerset Youth Theatre’s spooky drama tour in Highbridge store’s cellar wins praise

Youngsters from the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area have taken part in a series of fun-filled spooky performances.

Throughout September and October, the members of Somerset Youth Theatre (SYT) were on a secret mission – working with a small group of young people on a lighting, sound and tech project titled ‘LX:1’.

Through a series of open access tech workshops with Bright Productions and SYT, the young people, who had no prior experience of theatre production, became an incredible production team for Scary Cellar Tours at Sopha in Highbridge where the cafe, store and cellars were all used as sets, as pictured here.

“The brilliant young people learnt skills in designing lighting, sound and set and they have gained an Arts Award to celebrate their discoveries and explorations,” says a spokesperson.

“Watching this group of young people, working in tandem with Highbridge Youth Theatre Company has been humbling and inspiring.”

“Great things really can happen when you put young people in the driving seat!  The young people involved have all expressed an increase in confidence and well-being through the project.”

“SYT gave a massive thank you to Matt, Emily and the team at Sopha who helped to bring the project to life- they’ve shown what can happen when community partners work together to give young people opportunities to thrive through theatre and the arts.”

Somerset Youth Theatre also thanked Seed Sedgemoor, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, Bright Productions, Bravo events, Rev Martin and the team at St John’s Church Highbridge, and Ledger Solutions.

Among thoise invited was Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Lesley Millard who said it had been a “scary, fun and eye-opening evening” and she congratulated all those who took part.

This is the first of their ‘LX’ projects and from January they will move into LX:2, with more workshops for young people to learn skills in performance, tech, production and the behind-the-scenes stuff.

If you or someone you know works with young people who might like to be involved or for more info, email them at info@somersetyt.com.

They also hold weekly SYT sessions across Somerset https://somersetyt.co.uk/ and their winter holiday club Panto in a Week is coming up in December https://somersetyt.co.uk/panto-in-a-week/
