A popular, long-running low-cost Christmas card delivery service run by Huntspill and Highbridge Scouts will return across the Burnham-On-Sea area this week featuring new-look post boxes in tribute to the late founders of the service.
The Scout Post service, which runs from December 1st-16th, has been provided for more than 30 years, helping to raise many thousands of pounds for the group over the decades.
Cards are delivered locally for just 25p per card by the Scouts and are guaranteed to arrive by Christmas.
This year, the Scouts have teamed up with Burnham and Highbridge Men’s Shed to create new-look collection boxes in memory of Pat and Bob Weller, who founded the service over 30 years ago and also helped to run the Scout group for over 35 years.
“Pat and Bob launched our long-running post service from their front room – their house was literally turned into a sorting office every Christmas,” Sue Hunter, Cub Leader, told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“Sadly Pat died several years ago and Bob passed away this past summer. That’s why this Christmas we wanted to do something special as a tribute for them by unveiling these 12 lovely new post boxes.”
“Pat and Bob’s family came along to our Scout Hut on Tuesday to see the new post boxes and they say it really is the nicest way to remember them, adding that the couple would be so delighted at them.”
Sue adds: “It’s been a real community effort to get them finished in time for the start of this year’s collection. Our thanks go to Phil Perryman, Russell Gleed and Malcolm Newton at the Men’s Shed for making them, and the team here for all their work with them, including Mike and Tina Lowe, Ian Murley and Claudette Murley.”
Cards will be delivered to East Huntspill, West Huntspill, Highbridge, Burnham-On-Sea, Berrow and Pawlett at a cost of just 25p per card.
The delivery and sorting involves many hours of work by local Beavers, Cubs, Squirrels, Scouts and their parents, as well as a group of helpers.
“This is our biggest fundraising event of the year with all cards delivered at low cost before Christmas Day,” adds Claudette Murley.
“The 25p price has been kept the same to keep it as low cost as possible, especially in these tough times.”
Post can be delivered at the new-look boxes between December 1st to December 16th. A full name, address and postcode is needed on each envelope – and 25p per card should be placed in the box with your cards.
