A ceremony and fly-past are to be held to mark Armistice Day in Burnham-On-Sea today (Thursday, November 11th).
In Burnham, a short act of remembrance will take place next to the town’s flag pole in Old Station Approach at 11am when residents will be welcome to join in.
The Mayor Cllr Mike Facey will lead the proceedings alongside Rev Graham Witts, Vicar of Burnham, and a representative of the Royal British Legion.
There will be two minutes silence to remember those local people who gave their lives in conflicts.
Meanwhile, Middlezoy flying group are scheduled to perform flypasts today to mark the day. An Isaacs Fury biplane flown by Flt Lt Mike Laundy cfs. RAF (Retd.), a Mk 1 Auster flown by Mr Gary Priestley, and a 1947 Aeronca Champ flown by Mr Stefan Potepa and Flt Lt Rick Lee RAF (Retd.) will fly by.
They are scheduled to depart Middlezoy Aerodrome at 10.40am, East side of Bridgwater 10.44am, Puriton at 10.46am, Huntspill at 10.48am, Burnham seafront 10.51am, Brean 1055, Hold south of Brean Down 10.56am to 11.00am, Weston 11.03am, North of W S M 11.06am, Loxton 11.11am, Junction 22 M5 11.15am, Watchfield 11.16am, Mark Causeway 11.17am, Mark 11.18am, Blackford 11.19am, Burtle 11.23am, Edington 11.25am, and returning to Middlezoy Aerodrome at 11.28am, landing at 11.31am.
As always, the timings and routing are subject to short notice change according to the weather and aircraft serviceability.
Also, Stratton House nursing home in Burnham’s Rectory Road will also be holding its own ceremony today at 11am.
The day is observed on November 11th to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918.
Hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month”, in accordance with the armistice signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente that morning.
