Lewis, 10, raises £1,000 for BARB and RNLI after 8-mile fundraising walk

A community-spirited youngster has raised £1,000 for Burnham-On-Sea’s BARB Search & Rescue and Burnham RNLI by walking eight miles from Brean to Weston.

Lewis, 10, has always had a keen interest in Burnham’s rescue hovercrafts and the RNLI lifeboats – and, after completing his walk over the summer, he presented them with their cheques during a handover on Saturday (October 9th).

“He enjoys learning about their volunteer service and also watching them on training days, as well as when on call outs,” says Nicole Louise, who organised the fundraiser for her nephew. “He decided to raise money for these two charities by completing the walk during a day over the summer.”

“He believes that these charities do great and important work for the community and wanted to support them. Lewis also aspires to, one day, become a volunteer and to continue supporting them in keeping people safe.”

Lewis, who is a pupil at St Andrew’s School in Burnham, was accompanied on the walk by his grandfather, Jeff Thomas, who attended Saturday’s cheque presentation at the BARB seafront station.

Jeff said: “We are so proud of him. He loves seeing the lifeboats and hovercrafts practising and wanted to do something to raise funds. It’s a fantastic amount he has raised and we thank everyone for their support.”
