Police say a woman has sadly died after a fire which destroyed a caravan in Highbridge on Monday (October 4th).
Plumes of thick black smoke and flames were seen coming out of a caravan at Sandacre Residential Park in Old Burnham Road, as pictured here.
Crews from Burnham, Taunton, Bridgwater and Cheddar were called at 12.52pm and the fire service said that an occupant had been rescued by firefighters.
A Police spokesman said last night: “Enquiries are ongoing following the sudden death of a female in Highbridge on Monday 4th October. Police, fire and ambulance services were all called to a caravan site.”
“Firefighters rescued a female from one caravan, which was alight. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.”
The Police spokesman adds: “Our investigation is at an early stage but at this time it is being treated as unexplained but not believed to be suspicious.”
“Work to identify the female’s next of kin are ongoing. We will continue to carry out enquiries on behalf of the coroner.”
A fire spokesman said: “Our fire control received several 999 calls reporting a caravan on fire in a caravan park and quickly re-diverted a fire engine that was attending a different, but less serious incident close by and one additional fire engine.”
“On arrival, crews confirmed a static caravan was well alight with possibly one person still inside.”
“Crews requested further assistance so another 2 crews were sent to assist. One person was rescued by the fire service and was handed over to the ambulance crew on scene.”
“The caravan was 75 percent destroyed by fire and was extinguished using 6 Breathing apparatus, 1 hose reel jet, 1 safety jet and a thermal image camera. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
An air ambulance also landed nearby to help land ambulance crews at the scene.
