Burnham-On-Sea’s Mayor has this week asked visitors not to visit the town unless their trip is ‘absolutely essential’.
His comments come after the Government eased the nationwide lockdown on Wednesday (May 13th), introducing unrestricted travel, which in turn has raised concerns about a potential increase in visitors spreading the Coronavirus.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Mike Facey, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “For some weeks there have been reports of increasing numbers of people on our roads and streets, specifically in Burnham town centre.”
“We know that the level of visitors to Burnham is still far lower than this time in previous years, but now the Government has relaxed movement restrictions there is an expectation that we will see more visitors.”
“We understand that Burnham is a great place to visit and under usual circumstances we welcome all visitors.”
“However, at the present time we are still asking people not to visit unless their trip is essential.”
“For those who must visit, please remain alert to the constant threat of Coronavirus and respect each other’s space, remaining at least 2 metres apart.”
“We are talking with the local police on what plans they have in place to tackle those who flout the safety rules and to address reports of anti-social behaviour.”
