Burnham Rugby Club’s fitness challenge raises over £3,000 for hospital

-

Burnham-On-Sea Rugby Club supporters have raised a huge £3,000 for the town’s hospital by taking part in a three-day fitness challenge.

The club organised a “run, row, walk or cycle challenge” to encourage people of all ages to get active while abiding by the lockdown rules, raising funds during the Coronavirus pandemic.

The money will be used to help fund Burnham hospital’s dementia ward and make an upgrades area for patients and visitors.

The club’s Tim Piper said: “Firstly thank you to all that ran, walked, cycled and rowed — you have been amazing.”

“Even our chairman Gilly Hicks, who two years ago suffered a severe stroke, did a mile a day and kindly donated £100.”

“From young to old you have all pulled together, just as we would have for the Gullivers rugby weekend, which would have taken place this weekend in normal years.”

“We set out at 8am on friday morning to hit 1000km over 3 days. I was sceptical at first if we would hit that target but by Saturday morning it was reached and since then it’s been absolutely smashed!”

Those taking part completed an incredible distance of 3779.9km.

“We also set a target of £1,000 to raise money for our memorial hospital. In these current times of uncertainty and the unknown, you have all been incredibly generous and helped us raise a whopping £3,000.”

He adds: “A big thanks goes to Burnham portable toilet hire whose daughter is part of our junior committee (Emma O’Regan) and donated a very generous £300 towards our total, along with one of sponsors Havercroft meats who donated £100.”

“As a group of players we came up with this idea over two weeks ago now and we wanted to do something that would challenge us, keep us fit and also bring us and the community together.”

“This has gone way beyond what we thought it would do and the comments, efforts and general positivity is 100% what we all needed right now. We hope after this you continue on your family walks, 10km runs, 50km bike rides and 25km rows to keep yourself active.”

Tim adds: “Please keep smiling, staying safe and being strong for each other. We will all be back up the club very soon to start what promises to be another successful season on and off for the whole club.”
