Beach ban on dogs in Burnham-On-Sea comes into force tomorrow

-

A seasonal dog ban will return to part of Burnham-On-Sea beach this Friday (May 1st), it has been confirmed.

Sedgemoor District Council says its usual ban on dogs on the beach between Maddock’s Slade and Burnham Sailing Club will come into force from May 1st until September 30th.

Those who are caught walking dogs in that area of the beach could be landed with fines of up to £500, warns the council.

Council spokeswoman Claire Faun confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that the rules will apply despite the Coronavirus lockdown affecting the roles of some staff who work outdoors such as dog wardens.

The ban will be in place as it is part of a legal order issued under legislation. During the dog ban period, it is an offence to take your dog into that area of the beach and dog walkers can be issued with a fixed penalty notice or face prosecution for doing so.”

“The district council’s dog wardens undertake patrols at the beaches and can issue penalty notices to those caught with dogs on the banned beaches.”

Dogs can still be walked on the beach north of Maddock’s Slade towards the low lighthouse all year-round, however this is currently only on daily exercise walks and with social distancing in place due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

During recent years, the wardens have given out several fines on Burnham beach, between the jetty and the Pavilion, where dogs are banned all year round.
