Police were called to Brean on Saturday afternoon (April 25th) after more than 20 vehicles were parked along roadside verges while the occupants went for walks, ignoring the ‘stay at home’ guidance during the Coronavirus lockdown.
These photos, taken by a local resident, show lines of vehicles parked on the double yellow lines alongside Brean Down Road, leading up to the beach and Brean Down.
The National Trust currently has closed its car park in order to dissuade visitors. Brean Parish Council has also closed the beach to prevent vehicles being parked on the sands.
One local resident said the Police had been called and told Burnham-On-Sea.com that she “despairs” at the problem of people visiting despite the lockdown. She has been placing notices on car windscreens to request that motorists do not visit.
Farmer Richard Bigwood told Burnham-On-Sea.com he has had difficulty driving his tractor along the road at times. “I often have a long trailer on the back on my tractor and it was difficult to get around the mini roundabout today,” he said.
“People need to show a bit of thought. The double yellow lines are there for a reason. Even one of my field gates which is fenced off with bollards still had two cars parked in front.”
“It might be down to a lack of understanding of what goes on in the countryside, but people need to know we require constant access to go about our normal work and produce food.”
