Beach clean-up launched in Burnham-On-Sea after safety fears are raised over debris

-

A clean-up operation by Sedgemoor District Council is underway on Burnham-On-Sea beach this week after concrete debris and potentially dangerous metal objects emerged in the sand next to the town’s jetty.

High tides over recent weeks have washed the sand away, exposing concrete pieces and iron spikes to the south of the jetty where the Marine Lake pool once stood.

Council spokeswoman Claire Faun told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We inspected the beach and found that there was a great deal of concrete debris exposed on the foreshore, mostly exposed by the recent high tides.”

“We have made several attempts over the years to remove some of the more dangerous concrete and iron stakes that surface from time to time.”

“The inspection on the jetty showed that the spur had now built up with sand and a great deal more mud is to the south of the jetty.”

“We have a digger repairing the spur onto beach 1 this week and some of the material will be removed.”
