Work to repair Burnham-On-Sea’s sea wall has been delayed until the autumn of this year “at the earliest,” the Environment Agency has said this week.
As Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last year, the agency has installed warning notices along parts of Burnham-On-Sea seafront to advise walkers to take extra care when using the sea wall steps following damage by high tides.
Several steps are crumbling and the Environment Agency – which maintains them – had said repairs were scheduled to go ahead early in 2020, but the Coronavirus pandemic has changed the schedule.
Environment Agency spokeswoman Laura Lavery told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “A recent inspection of the tidal defences for Burnham-On-Sea, and surrounding area, found some damage to the concrete steps, walkways and construction joints.”
“We are planning repair work and estimate construction to start in Autumn 2020 at the earliest.”
“Although the repair works are needed, the defence scheme is still fully functional and is still performing as designed.”
The warning notices have been installed along The Esplanade to advise users to take caution and “beware of damage when entering the beach.”
They add: “Tidal action has resulted in localised damage along the sea defence. Please use additional caution when enjoying this area whilst we wait for our programmed repairs to begin in 2020.”
