Following an appeal for the owner of an abandoned boat found washed up on Stert Island to come forward, Sedgemoor District Council says there is a happy ending to the story.
A local resident has come forward to ask if she could turn the boat into a flower planter in her garden – and the council has agreed to her proposal as the boat’s owner never came forward.
Claire Faun from Sedgemoor District Council says: “This is an example of upcycling at its best! Sedgemoor is pleased that the boat has found a new owner, otherwise it would have been scrapped.”
The boat was washed ashore on Stert Island in October, as pictured below, and after being recovered by the RNLI, its owner had been given until 1st November to claim it, otherwise the council said it would be disposed of.
“It was not in particularly good condition and the suspicion is that it is the marine equivalent of fly-tipping, but SDC endeavoured to contact its owner before disposal,” added Claire.
Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and a lifeboat had been called out on October 15th to investigate the beached vessel, as we reported here, after it was spotted on the eastern side of the island opposite Burnham-On-Sea. The craft was towed off the island by the RNLI and was securely moored at Burnham-On-Sea sailing club pontoons.
