Berrow and Brean residents gathered next to a commemorative bench on Berrow Village Green on Remembrance Sunday to honour those members of the village who died during the Great War.
The commemorative bench bearing the names of local fallen soldiers was unveiled in Berrow earlier this year, as Burnham-On-Sea.com reported here.
On Sunday villagers placed crosses on the bench next to the names and then placed them into the soil around the memorial tree at the centre of the bench.
The memorial bench is eight-sided, with each side bearing the name of a fallen soldier, permanently etched into the material of the seat.
The bench was created using a special material made from recycled milk bottles and looks and feels like wood whilst being much longer-lasting.
As the soldiers’ names are engraved into it, they will remain a permanent and visible feature on the memorial. A beech tree, similar to those growing in the Somme during 1914, is placed in the centre of the bench.
