WW1 cards remembering Burnham’s young soldiers to be displayed in local homes

-

Cards featuring the names of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge’s young soldiers who died during WW1 have been created by a local history teacher with the intention of getting them displayed in the windows of homes where they lived.

As the nation marks Remembrance Sunday this weekend, the poignant project aims to raise local awareness of the young men who fell during service.

King Alfred School Academy Teachers Becky Dalziel and Nigel Smith have launched the project after seeing a post on social media about a similar scheme elsewhere that they thought could work well here too.

“Mrs Williams, King Alfred School’s resources manager and historian, has researched all the local boys and found their pictures and where they are buried. She also found their address from 1911 census records,” says Becky.

Among the local youngsters who saw action in 1914 was Midshipman Cecil William Holt, pictured above, who served in the Royal Navy and died, aged 15.
Becky adds: “We thought it would be a lovely tribute to do it here, especially as Year 10 pupils have just got back from a history trip to the battlefields of WW1.”
“People can find out if a soldier lived at their house in Burnham-On-Sea or Highbridge by visiting https://astreetnearyou.org/.”
“We will be asking householders if they would mind displaying a picture in the next few days.”
