A special event is to be held in Burnham-On-Sea this Friday (October 4th) to mark ‘Celebrating Older Persons Day’ in conjunction with UN Older Persons Day.
The free event will run from 10am until 3pm at Burnham Community Centre in Berrow Road with lots of information for older members of the community available.
A Burnham-On-Sea Police spokeswoman said: “A variety of different stalls will be coming along, including a driving simulator from Somerset Road Safety, plus Lifeline, Village Agents, SCLT, Compass Disability, Red Cross, fire service, Azheimer’s Society, IAMRS, Somerset care, Wiltshire Farm Foods, Somerset Sight and Somerset Independence.”
The UN says its special worldwide UN Older Persons Day is held every year as older people have always played a significant role in society as leaders, caretakers and custodians of tradition.
“Yet they are also highly vulnerable, with many falling into poverty, becoming disabled or facing discrimination. As health care improves, the population of older people is growing. Their needs are also growing, as are their contributions to the world.”
“The International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society and raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges of ageing in today’s world.”
