Burnham-On-Sea kite festival organiser voices concern over beach glass

-

Concerns have this week been raised about shards of glass being found on Burnham-On-Sea beach.

The organiser of Burnham-On-Sea’s Kite Festival says she had to undertake a big clean-up of the sands during her event last weekend amid concerns for the safety of children.

Kite festival organiser Gaynor Brown, pictured, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We collected several bucketfuls of glass from the sand along the main beach between the jetty and Pavilion to prevent anyone cutting themselves.”

“It’s worrying that this is such a problem — we found many pieces of brown glass with spikes facing upwards plus shards of broken bottles.”

“We had to put up several safety disclaimer notices to warn visitors about safety.”

She adds: “I would like to see more cleaning of the beach to remove glass and other rubbish to improve safety.”

Claire Faun, spokeswoman for Sedgemoor District Council, which manages the beach, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The area is cleaned on a daily basis. We urge all visitors to the beach not to take glass bottles or jars onto the beach and dispose of their empties in the bins provided.”
