Video: High tides give Burnham-On-Sea seafront a battering

-

These were the scenes when strong onshore winds and a high tide combined to give Burnham-On-Sea seafront a battering on Saturday evening (August 31st).

A 12-metre tide reached its peak at just before 8.40pm, when high winds created large waves and sent plumes of spray over Burnham’s sea wall.

The Environment Agency closed Burnham-On-Sea’s flood gates at the top of the jetty and at the Sailing Club as a safety precaution.

A Flood Alert was also issued for the Bristol Channel at the weekend, including the coastline between Burnham-On-Sea and Weston-super-Mare.

The agency said that flooding was possible and that residents and walkers along seafronts should “be prepared” for possible over-topping of sea walls with spray.

Further high tides are due and the Burnham-On-Sea tide times are here.

“We believe there is a possibility of flooding for coastal and tidal areas at Minehead, Combwich, Bridgwater, Burnham-On-Sea, Uphill, Weston-super-Mare, Kewstoke, Sand Bay and Kingston Seymour,” said an Environment Agency spokesman.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. Teams are checking defences and conditions on the ground.”

Coastguards advised seafront users to keep a safe distance away and not put themselves at risk.
