Brean Pontins holiday park evacuated after ‘gas leak’ incident

-

Pontins holiday park in Brean was evacuated on Tuesday evening (August 27th) following a suspected chlorine gas leak.

Fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Taunton were called to the holiday park shortly before 7.30pm.

A spokesman said: “A call was received to a suspected gas leak in the plant room for the pool at the holiday park.”

“Two fire engines from Burnham-On-Sea, the Environmental Protection Unit, and a fire engine from Taunton were sent to the incident to investigate.”

“Police, Ambulance, and HART were also in attendance.”

“A full evacuation of the site took place and two casualties were treated with oxygen therapy after it was suspected they may have been exposed to gases.”

“Two fire-fighters in breathing apparatus gained access into the plant room to take gas readings.”

“No abnormal readings were detected and no leaking chemicals found. The incident was handed back to the Police and the staff of the holiday park.”

The evacuation was lifted late last night as Police continued their investigation.

One holidaymaker told the BBC: “We were in the bar, sat down, having a drink. Then they came in and told us to please get our belongings and move.”

“All the shutters went down, and we went to the safety point.”

“They were very organised, shortly after that they asked us to come to the main gates.”

Another said: “Everyone was panicking because they would not open the other gates.”

A Police spokesman added: “The fire service was called to Pontins, Brean on Tuesday evening, 27 August, and evacuated guests and staff as a precaution. They have since confirmed to police that there was no gas leak or fire.”

”Minor criminal damage in a shower area, including shower curtains being pulled down, has been reported to police and is under investigation.”

In February, we reported here that part of the ceiling beam collapsed in the main entertainment hall but no-one was seriously hurt.
